College and university professors are expected to do research in their field and regularly publish papers in addition to teaching classes and advising students.  This is why 4-year colleges and universities usually only require faculty to teach 2-3 courses a semester at the most, while 2-year colleges may require up to 5  (but don't require research).

Pretty simple. They need to research their area and, if possible, do research papers. Colleges and Universities LOVE their faculty when they do research papers. It "pretties up the room". Doesn't mean they are great teachers, just means they are great researchers.
