feminism is advocacy by and for women.

If that means gaining equality in areas where women have suffered in the past, so be it.

If that means preserving benefits traditionally accorded to women, so be that too.

the quick version is that they advocate women's rights most but not all are women. there are different types: marxist feminists who state that women are oppressed due to patriarchy (male dominance) the family in this case trap women in their traditional roles (mother housewife, stops them achieving their goals). liberal feminists advocate equity between women and men they see that if you change the law you change women's lives, radical feminists they are well the man hating kind of feminists, truely radical feminists advocate lesbianity as women who are hetreosexual are sleeping with the enemy. black feminists state that feminists ignore the opression posed on black women. those are the main types but you also get postmodern feminists, anti-pornography feminists and such.
