  1. fire creates a gas out of whatever is burning. gas=lighter than solid. and since burning is a phase change of sorts, the flame will go in the direction of the gas. since a free flames fuel is stationary, the gas will go up. but in cases of flamethrowers and welding torches, the fuel is being propelled in a direction, hence the direction the flame will go as it burns.

  2. Fire = oxidation

    rust= oxidation

    fire is just really quick rust

  3. flame goes in the direction of the hot material, which is a gas at that point, is going.

    being a hot gas, and lighter, it goes up because the heavier gas (air) around it falls down under it, pushing it up.

    interestingly, when you light a match in the space station, it goes out.

    the air doesn't rise, because there's no gravity to push the cold air in under the lighter hot gas.

    so, when all the oxygen that's close is used up, the match goes out.

    here on earth, it's the oxygen feeding the flame from underneath that keeps the match burning.
