What is first degree forgery?

What exactly is first degree forgery? I have a friend that was accused of that and about how many years of prison will he get if he is guilty?

He probably forged the names on checks or something...faked the signatures so that he could cash them or something similar.

I'm not sure how long he'd go to prison...it will probably depend on his defense and if he has a good lawyer.
