  1. Hello,

An 8x8 board is used for play but the normal starting positions of the pieces [king, queen, rooks, bishops and knights] are 'randomly' chosen and hence the name 'Fischer Ramdom Chess'.  You may like to visit my web page - link below.  You should see a version of 'random chess' listed about half way down the first page.  Just click on it and you can play 'Random Chess' yourself?   I hope this is helpful for you!

    Yours sincerely,

    Chesmayne.

  2. It's a variation of Chess where the back rank pieces are shuffled.

  3. It is a variation of regular chess. Bobby Fischer thought that high level games had predetermined winners (kind of like in wrestling) To counter this he created random chess which counters fixed results by randomizing the starting positions of the pieces. The pawns still start in the same place but all of the other pieces are placed randomly in the back rank.

  4. Fisher Random (named from it's inventor) is a chess variant where before the game a starting position is randomly set up, subject to certain rules. After this, the game is played in the same way as standard chess. In particular, pieces and pawns have their normal moves, and each player's objective is to checkmate the opponent's king.

The variant is sometimes also called Shuffle Chess or Chess960, as there is 960 combinations of starting positions of the game.

Shuffle Chess had been played for quite some time before this, as early as 1842. Fischer's goal was to eliminate what he considers the complete dominance of openings preparation in chess today, and to replace it with creativity and talent. Also, by eliminating memorized book moves, Fischer believed that it will level the playing field and as a consequence make computer chess programs much weaker, as they rely heavily on the opening book to beat humans.
