Essentially, free energy is that energy available by the molecule to do work.

Most commonly, G, the Gibbs free energy is used as it is a constant pressure and volume quantity (ie. useful for most benchtop chemistry) G = U + PV - TS = H - TS

Where U is internal energy, T is temp, S is entropy and H is enthalpy.

So it is the available energy that isnt need to perform the P-V work necessary as the temp changes.
