  1. The heritage of the frontier is the development of US culture in the context of the culture inherited from England, France and Spain, coupled with the alterations adopted from minority cultures both native and European. Culture in the United States is not English, and not German, Irish, Swedish, French, Spanish, native  or Dutch, but a synthesis of the cultures that developed it.

A friend in college called this Arboreal determinism, in essence that American Culture dropped from the trees like protohuman apes. This was actually intended to be a satire on the near "hero-worship' given to Frederick Jackson Turner.

Turner's thesis is more direct, focusing on the release of tension developed in the more heavily settled areas by the availability of new lands in the west.
