  1. hi im not at fort benning but we are in south georgia they have said that the weather can be uncomfortable in the summer and i have too say so far other than the d**n gnats its not been bad...its rained pretty regularly...and the humidity isnt any worse than fayetteville north carolina..as for hurricanes etc..i dont believe georgia because of the way the coast line is ...doesnt get hit much but sometimes we do get the rain...as for things to do you are close to alot of things ..there is jeckel island i probably misspelled that...its supposed to be one of the most romantic beaches in the world....i had to go look and see exactly where the base is..lol...we are down south a little further in valdosta near the florida line...i think you probably will get more rain being up north a little more..there is always atlanta for entertainment...and being close to I75 is convenient

  2. hey, well i just left fort benning - and am fixing to go to germany.

this is the myspace group for the base, and there are ALOT of army wifes from there online and would be really helpful for the answers. I dont have a kid so i am not sure about most the stuff your asking, but they are really helpful.

we lived there for a year and a half on base, and honestly the weather isnt bad - sucks in the summer because of the humitidy ( dunno where your coming from ) i loved living on base, the housing aint the greatest but its not the worst. also i have pics on my myspace of the housing i lived at. just send me an email at carolin.arrington@yahoo.com and i will send you my link and everything i wont mind helping ya out

  3. Despite that the base has awesome facilities, the town of Columbus caters many excitement as well.  The heart of Columbus is about 8 miles north down the road.  You will be 200-miles or more from the sea to the south.  I for one cannot tell you what your kids can do but as a Marine who went to jump school there can tell you were each and every bar are located including tattoo parlors!  The weather there mild but humid, don't have your kids go into the woods, ticks and poison ivy, a lot of it!  I for one haven't been there during hurricanes but they do get the aftermath of the tail winds.  There have been one incident of a break and entering in Columbus, but that was not concern to us.  Columbus does have a indoor mall there and has quite a few strip malls also.  To do some fishing, the nearby river just off base provides the recreation.  About 150 miles away is the Appalachian mountains to the north.  I remember the beautiful trees that shroud over the road in various parts.  I was only there for a bout 4 months, mostly confined on-base, and occasionally on weekends go to the bars and clubs.

I never did mention the closer town of Benning Hills, because there wasn't no excitement there, all the excitement lies at Columbus.

  4. The schools on post as well as off post are pretty good.  The schools off-post vary, the further north you go the schools are better.  You have the springer opera house downtown and there is one museum which is small.  The best nearest city is atlanta which is approximately 100 miles away but everything is in atlanta.  Panama city is about a 3 hour drive and it is nice,,, i wouldn't go there during spring break though.  The crime also varies by whether you are in north or south columbus.  I personally don't mess with anything downtown or south of exit 7.  North columbus is wheree everything is located anyway.  The weather is hot and humid in the summer and cool during the winter.  No tropical storms or hurricanes since I'e been here and that has been 7 years  The gym on post is great, but so is the YMCA or others like Gold's Gym.  The people vary whether you are on post or off post.  I lived in quarters on post but got tired of the "yard n**i",  There is definitely great housing now on Benning, lots of houses under a year old, but I bought built a house off post and am quite happy with it.  I just retired and I originally had no intention on living here, but Columbus is now home.
