What is fun to do in St. John?

I know that spring break is far away (not until April for me) but since I'm going to be a senior this year my parents have planned a trip to St. John. We already have reserved a villa and gotten the plane tickets and I'm really excited about the trip. I know it is going to be nice relaxing on the beaches but I was wondering if anyone has ever vacationed there before and what fun things are there to do on the island? Your help and ideas are much appreciated. Thank you.

  1. I have to disagree with Stan, St John is a great place to vacation for singles, couples, families and especially teens.

The shopping is wonderful, nobody hawking you on every corner to shop in their store. You have 2 shopping areas.Wharfside Village and Mongroose Junction. Plenty of stores to explore. Trust me, you will not go through every store while on vacation.

Most tourists go there for the water activities. There are 39 pristine beaches on St John and each one is unique.

Some activities to enjoy horseback riding, diving, snorkeling, dinghy rentals, boat excursions around the island or to the BVI, or just getting a nice tan and hanging out at the beach. Hiking is also big on St John (2/3 National Park land) The ferry will also take you to St Thomas and the British Virgin Islands.

Talk to your parents about an excursion to The Baths on Virgin Gorda BVI. That will be a very enjoyable time.

In April on St Thomas they have carnival celebrations. You can do a search before you go. Just search 2009 St Thomas USVI carnival and you will get the schedule.

The music is great with steel pan band music. Here is a link to music on the island. Check this link before you go.

St John is my favorite caribbean island and I think you will have a wonderful fun time and be sad to leave.

I got to swim with the turtles on my last trip. Francis Bay Beach. I was so excited.

Enjoy and come back if you have any specific questions you want answers to.)

  2. I grew up in St. Thomas when I was a kid. And ST. John is a national park. Meaning anything you would do in a park, camping, boating, hiking, swimming . You are in the Virgin Island during St. Thomas's carnival which is but a ferry ride away.  You can go to parties, street fairs. Another nice ferry ride away is the British Virgin Islands which may have more foreign tourist and venues to cater to these tourist.  It is a beautiful place to be. Enjoy your trip.

P.S. The drinking age is 18 in the entire USVI. I don't think it is lower in the BVI.

  3. St. John is much quieter than St. Thomas. Most of the Island used to owned by the Rockefellers and was donated as a national park. There are donkeys and goats and chickens that run out onto the road everywhere - but fun for a high school senior? Not really. You can go into the bars, but I think the drinking age is still 21. Your parents are probably going to want to soak up the rays and just relax. I don't recommend driving yourself. They drive on the left side of the road with left hand drive cars which is a terrible combination. There's a little bit of shopping in Cruz Bay - you may be able to occupy yourself for a day there before getting bored. I like Leinster Bay for snorkling. It's by the Annaberg plantation ruins and it's about a mile hike along the beach. The snorkling is good at the far side of the bay and at Waterlemon Cay (the little island out there).

Mostly it's about sightseeing, sun bathing, being romantic and shopping (especially on St. Thomas). You can take the passenger ferry to Red Hook and there's "Coral World" there... It's an aquarium. Woohoo...

It's funny, it's one of my favorite places in the world, but if I were 17 I'd be kinda bored. This vacation's for your parents - let them enjoy themselves and rejuvenate and maybe they'll send you to Italy after you graduate! Good luck.
