What is function for alanine transaminase?

i just done my LFT(liver function test)recently,and my doctor said my alanine transaminase is 52.which is high..i want to know what its function and wat happen if my alanine transaminase is high?my total protein also high.

  1. Alanine transaminase or ALT is a transaminase enzyme (EC 2.6.1.2). It is also called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) or alanine aminotransferase (ALAT).

    It catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from alanine to a-ketoglutarate, the products of this reversible transamination reaction being pyruvate and glutamate.

        glutamate + pyruvate ⇌ α-ketoglutarate + alanine
