  1. If you want it basically:

Functionalism says EVERYTHING is good for society.

You can do the rest from there.

  2. It sounds like this question is right off of your homework. I'll do my best, but your book probably has the answers.

Functionalism is a type of sociology theory that has to do with whether something is functional or not. For example if you look at a classic social issue such as women's rights, you could say it was and is functional for our society because the society accepted it and has kept it part of our value system or norms. If something is dysfunctional for the state of the society, such as slavery was, then it will be left behind because it does not serve a purpose for the society's well being.

The level of analysis is macro, or broad. This theory looks at the large institutions of society. and does NOT ever look at individuals.

The focus of analysis in my opinion is social change.

Manifest functions are intended outcomes from a change in society that are positive. Latent functions are outcomes that are unintended and negative. For example: If we take the slavery example once again, a manifest function of outlawing slavery is that the slaves go free. A latent function is that the plantation owners have no one to tend their crops and it has a bad effect on the economy.

Hope this is what you were looking for!

Attached is a website that goes into it more in detail, and includes more history.
