I'm trying to help out my younger sister with an assignment on gender stereotypes.

She asked for my help because I'm g*y, go figure, isn't that sexuality stereotypes?

The direct question is what is gender stereotypes? AND how can the poem written by Robert Southly “ What are little boys made of? What are little boys made of? Frogs and snails and Puppy dogs tails, that’s what little boys are made of. What are little girls made of? What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of.” Relate to it?

Any advice on where to point her would be very helpful. Thanks.

  1. Well I see the stereotype as being that boys are made up of things that are active, outdoors and sometimes disgusting like frogs and snails but girls are just like cookies or candy - look good but don't do anything.

Boys are seen as actors in life and girls are supposed to just sit there and be acted upon

  2. A stereotype is anything that's typically thought about a certain group of people.  So that little poem fits of course.  Other things that would fit are things like men not crying, women being bad drivers, women being gossips, men being naturally better at math and science.

Other forms of stereotypes than gender stereotypes would be that blondes are dumb, asians are smarter,  etc.  It's anything you typically think is true about a group of people that isn't necessarily true.

I don't know if that helps at all, but good luck to your younger sister with her assignment and kudos to you for helping her out.

  3. your sister's teacher is a moron. That's not always the case sometimes boys are made of sugar and spice and everything nice and girls are made of weeds.

  4. You're right...it is a sexual stereotype for her to have asked you that.  So there's one.  As for Southy's little ditty...it implies that everything about boys is slimy and negative, and that everything about girls is sweet and positive.  The whole thing is one gigantic stereotype in every way possible.  Other stereotypes:  Women are only good for two things, and both of them involve taking care of domestic issues.  Men have no emotions, are always strong and powerful, etc...you know what?  I suggest you monitor this board and you'll see lots of them.  Good luck to your little sis on the assignment (and it's sweet of you to be helping her)!

  5. I think the poem is actually quite prolific.......defining girls and boys in the very traditional stereotypes' of gender...........

My take of gender stereotype would be i guess, woman at home, keeping house, looking after the children and cooking dinner.

Guy would be going out to work to earn the money....come home and do nothing lol....

Seriously though these stereotypes do go back a few years, opinions may now differ considering the working mother and house husband......so i guess it depends on what take of things you want to write about.

    Good luck :)

  6. girls: weak, reliant, pushovers... nice isnt a powerful word

boys: careless adventurous...they are just playing with those things.

  7. I'm not sure this is what you are looking for but how about when someone say's a girl is a "girly girl"...
