H.J. Sants (1964) coined the term `genealogical bewilderment' to refer to children who had no or only uncertain knowledge of their natural parents and argued that such uncertainty could have a detrimental effect on the child's mental health.

Genealogical bewilderment is a supposed mental condition resulting from identity problems concerning blood relations of a person, which usually is found in a child who either has surrogate parents, foster parents, or is adopted.

It's this feeling I've had all my life that, no matter how much I am loved and no matter how great my upbringing was, I will never fit in anywhere.

This is not something great parenting can negate.  Great parents accept that it exists, find ways not to take it as a personal rejection of them or their parenting skills, and talk about it with their kids, encouraging them to have the best and happiest lives they can in spite of it.

(My Googling turned up the 1964 Sants answer too.  I had no idea this term predated my 1965 birth!  Why, in 2008, is this such a radical and threatening idea?!)
