  1. It is the study of your genes by tracing back your ancestors.

Unlike Family History, which includes details of places and occupations etc, genealogy is just the bare bones (names, dates, and places of births, marriages and deaths) before the flesh is added.

  2. It's your family tree, your ancestry.

  3. Its the research of your family  history.

  4. Here, from the website:   http://www.thefreedictionary.com/genealo...

    ge·ne·al·o·gy  (jn-l-j, -l-, jn-)

    n. pl. ge·ne·al·o·gies

    1. A record or table of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or ancestors; a family tree.

    2. Direct descent from an ancestor; lineage or pedigree.

    3. The study or investigation of ancestry and family histories.

    --------------------------------------...

[Middle English genealogie, from Old French, from Late Latin genelogia, from Greek genelogi : gene, family; see gen- in Indo-European roots + -logi, -logy.]

Another word for it is: "ahnentafel", which, I am told, comes from the German language.  Most people do their family tree by starting with themselves, then list their parents, their parents' parents, and so on back, which is the "ahnentafel" part.  "Genealogy" actually is from the far-distant ancestor down to you.

Another way of saying it is, who did you get your genes from?  THAT's genealogy.  It is who you are, where in the world you came from, it is personal history, and it is fun and exciting!

  5. It's all about your family and how it sort of intermingles, into a family tree.
