  1. that's the same as genetically modifying. This has been done since man first started farming thousands of years ago. If you sow some seeds and get fruit, then only plant the seeds of the biggest fruit, you are selectively growing fruit that has the characteristics of being larger than the average. Over time, you will end up with a new variety that has the characteristics you have selected and is different from the original. You can also cross breed the seeds of more than one plant to obtain characteristics from both parent plants. this is how the fruit and cereals we grow today have developed from the basic wild plants our ancestors first ate and planted. The advance in genetics now allows us to do this in a lab rather than breeding naturally which takes time and is unpredictable. The crossing of 2 plants with characteristics you are looking for are not guaranteed! We have tried to change plants by cross breeding and genetically in labs, to produce plants with qualities we want such as size, taste, shelf life (time before the fruit/veg starts to go bad) and resistance to pests (reducing the need for so many fertilisers and pesticides)and differing weather conditions (resistance to drought).

All the food we consume is genetically modified from the original plant, be through thousands of years of farming and breeding, or a few  years in a lab!

hope this doesn't put you off food!

  2. Genetic manipulation is the basics of plant and animal breeding that has been practiced from the beginning of agriculture. It has become a science today and has given us many improved varieties of crops and animals.
