What is getting a surgery like (septoplasty)?

I have a severely deviated septum (my doctor said on a scale of 1 through 10, my nose was a 9). I'm only 13 and I am probably getting it done during thanksgiving break.

Does it hurt to get blood drawn? I just got a chicken pox shot, a meningitis shot, and the first installment of the HPV shot. Does it hurt worse than those? Is it sore?

How about the IV? Are you already drugged up so much it doesn't hurt? or what? Does the anesthesia (sp?) kick in quickly? Does it hurt to get it out?

what else will they do pre-surgery for a septoplasty? does it hurt really bad afterwards? i'm sorry that i have so many questions, i'm just really curious. basically just tell me everything you know about surgery and that'd be awesome.

  1. I had an appendicitis a couple of years ago and it was dope!! I mean not the horrible pain beforehand, but the whole surgery thing was sweet. They will put you under and you wont feel a thing, except some soreness when you wake up. As for getting your blood drawn and the IV, don't trip, neither are any worse than a shot, in fact you could argue that they are less painful. The shot they give you before surgery, (The one that puts you out in about a minute or two) is the best feeling **** in the world. I was asking the nurses what it was and where I could get some and they just laughed, and next thing I knew I was lying in a hospital bed on a morphine drip and the surgery was over. Modern Medicine kicks ***!!

  2. I can't speak for surgery, but drawing blood doesn't hurt if it's done right. There's just this really odd feeling of losing pressure in your arm. I hear that after septoplasty you have the mother of all nosebleeds, so you have to keep it plugged for a while, but I'm just going by anecdotal evidence.

  3. They'll just prepare you for surgery and then once you get close they'll probably give you a dose of intravenous valium to calm your nerves and relax your muscles. Then in the theater they'll knock you out straight away and you wont feel a thing. Neither the valium or the anaesthesia will hurt more than a regular injection in the arm or inhaling helium.

After surgery you might feel pretty sore though, depending on the work they do while you're under.

    Good luck.

  4. I am currently off from school after having major stomach surgery, so I hope I can answer all your questions well. I'll start from your first question and work my way down. Getting blood drawn doesnt hurt anywhere near as much as injections, and if your going to be in hospital for any length of time I'd get used to the idea of needles. It's now three weeks after my surgery and I still look like a pin cushion, but the needles really arent as bad as they sound. Getting blood drawn really isnt that bad, I'd volunteer to give blood. When they put the IV in is a little worse, it hurts quite a bit, but it doesnt last long, just brace yourself, think about other things and you'll be fine. When I was in hospital, they once used something called an Emla patch. Its a little patch they put on your skin to numb it before they put the needle in. By the sounds of things, your from america, so I'm really not sure if they'd have it over there (I'm from Australia), but you could query them before you go in. The anesthesia kicks in extremely quickly, you wont even have time to count to ten. I'm afraid thats all I can answer but I hope I've helped a little. Good luck, and you will probably feel really crabby in the hospital in the following few days after your op, you might feel like you'll never get out, but you'll be out before you know it.
