Genetically modified crops are plants whose traits has been altered using genetic engineering.  This is done with the intention of improving the characteristics of the plant such as to increase its yield and resistance to pests. An example was 'golden rice' which was provided with Vitamin A. While the intention of the research was for good, there are activists such as Greenpeace which oppose GMOs (genetically modified organisms) due to possible negative ramifications of genetic engineering of these organisms.
