  1. they are fighting over land just like 99% of all wars!

  2. You must have been hibernating because there have been so many questions about it asked on YA. It's now getting tedious.

  3. The same thing as with the U.S. and Iraq, only without the ocean (not sure about the oil, though). Georgia used to be a part of the old Soviet Union, but became independent when the USSR "fell apart". Now Russia (its new name and old one as well) is trying to get other provinces back.

  4. Georgia is having a civil war. Part of the country wants to split off and form it's own nation.  The Georgian government waded into disputed territory with military force and the separatists have been asking Russia for help for a while now.  When the Georgians rolled in with thanks, the Russians finally responded to the please of the separatists. Most of the Georgian refugees from their civil war have already fled to Russia.

Imagine for a moment that during the US civil war, Mexico had come to the aid of the Confederacy. That's what Russia is doing, getting involved in a civil war at the request of the people trying to split off and form their own country.

If the tales of the Georgian government's treatment of some ethnic groups in the separatists areas are true, then Russia is actually the GOOD guy, marching in to stop genocide.
