What is going on with the book Nathaniel's Nutmeg?

Can somebody help explain what the book Nathaniel's Nutmeg is about? After I finish a chapter and think about what I have read, I realize that i just don't get it. Help please?

  2. I liked the book, though I did feel lost at times too. There's a lot of historical stuff in the book that, if you don't have a solid background in the history they're referring to, is going to seem confusing.

    If you have to read the book for school, I recommend sticking with it and rereading whole chapters or sections if you need to. I read it for fun because the subject matter sounded interesting, but it was written in a more "academic" style, rather than a "fun-reading" style, so I had to slog through it.

    It does get pretty interesting after a while -- you'll never look at the Dutch in the same way again! -- but you have to hang in there.
