She got a hold of my little sisters hot coco mix and my dog is always panting and she is very jittery she will not sleep she has kept me up all night. Is she okay or not. One of the downsides right now is that she just gave a batch of puppies so I'm not sure if that is okay. Help!?

  1. Why don't you (instead of waiting the whole night and spending time on the computer asking) take your poor dog to the vet? None of us on here can be sure if she will be alright. And we can't do anything for your dog, so if you want her to to be alright, get her to the vet.

Edit. That's what emergency vets are for. They are kinda open when the other isn't. :) What happens when a dog dangerously needs the vet during the night? They just lay there and die, because "the regular vet isn't open"? No.

  2. Well, while dogs should never have chocolate, it could be a lot worse. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous for dogs, and white chocolate the least dangerous. It also depends on the size of the dog. If she's a large dog and only got ahold of one hot cocoa package, then she should be just fine. If you're very worried (which, as an owner of two dogs, I completely understand. My dogs have eaten chocolate and swallowed a chicken carcass whole) I would call the vet and get their opinion. Definitely don't forget to mention she just had a litter.

  3. while chocolate is toxic to dogs ( causes heart arrhythmia and seizures in the worst cases ) It depends on the type of chocolate that they eat and the amount. Most Hot coco is made of milk chocolate and the toxic levels are 5lbs- 5oz   10lb  10oz etc bakers choc is more toxic and 1/2 oz in a 5lbs is toxic you can get a lot of this information off the ASPCA website. Your dog sounds like he is just acting like most dogs that in jest chocolate at any dose they get hyper from the caffeine and sugar and most break with diarrhea.

  5. You'd be panting too if you just had a Litter of puppies.

Chocolate causes kidney and liver failure in dogs when ingensted in large quantities.  (So do onions, apple cores, pop corn, nuts, grapes.)  Don't think one packet of cocoa mix will do any serious damage.

  6. Cocoa is bad for dogs, but where she just gave birth maybe something more is going on.Call Vet ASAP! Good Luck
