I'm just looking for something to get some exercise on that will be useful should I decide to ride places instead of drive. I have no idea how to figure out sizes and all that either. Can you help?

  1. Definately go to a bike store. Ask to ride several different models and see what feels good. My wife and I just bought Giant Transcend bikes for the same reasons. We ride them to work, and on errands or just to go get ice cream. For city riding they have nice large diameter tires that are thin, a comfy seat, fenders and a stylish rack on the back. I definately reccommend it!

  2. I would recommend a hybrid type bike.  They have a larger wheel diameter than a mountain bike but not as narrow as a road bike.  They also have more upright handelbars than both so for short rides tend to be more comfotable.  Size is determined by a couple of things and so you should choose a good bike shop to help you with that, not some box store where the sales person whatched a simplex video or read a non descripct cover all booklet  (worked there done that SORRY to anybody I sold a bike to).  The biggest key in my opinion is test ride a few see wht feels best and go with that.  You won't ride it if it isn't comfortable.
