What is good formula to determine tread & riser for deck steps?

  1. the maximum rise should not exceed  8"- measure the total rise and divide by 8  to get the # of steps- round up if its not a whole # ( which it likely wont be) then divide the total rise by that # . that will give you the rise. rise and run should add up to 18 -  an 8" rise should have a 10" tread. local codes will vary- if its getting inspected, ask your code official about max rise and  rise/run calculation

  3. Your stairs should meet all three of these criteria.

    Rise + run = 17-18"

    Rise + 2 run = 27-28"

    Rise x run = 75-80

    If it meets all three of these, it will meet code.  Also remember that the variance between your highest and lowest rise cannot exceed 3/8".  Hope this helps.
