  1. any bike will carry your a 100 miles the question is what will work for you a mountain is by far the most comfort but the slowest however a road bike is the fast of them all and the most uncomfortable  think how strong you are if you are not strong in the leg you might want lots of low gears like 20 inches to 33 inches but you want speed and time you need a 110 to 90 inches gear so i do hope this helps you man see you biking

  2. What can you afford? For 100 miles a week, I'd look into getting an entry-level road bike do them. All the big guys in the market. Now is a good time to start shopping as the 2009 models will be out soon and they'll start trying to clear the leftover 2008 models!

  4. RICHGUY?  Okay---go gor the Trek Madone ( go to your nearest TREK bike dealer and ask for their FREE 2008 catalog )---Both carbon and aluminum bikes are available . Specialized have the S-Works ROUBAIX SL, the TARMAC SL for  your convenience ( both are carbon bikes). The weight of CARBON bikes will make it lighter for you and definitely FASTER. Go for it----

  5. As some body has already stated, a roadbike would be your best bet.

It's unclear from your question whether it's 20 miles a day(10 miles to work and back) or 100 miles on a Sunday morning!

It's also unclear as to your age and fitness!

    Briefly:

Commuting; Any entry level road bike will do (if it's Aluminium try to get a carbon fork, it will smooth the ride a little)

Weekend Warrior; If you are a slow older rider then look into a steel frame (or if you can afford it titanium) as a long time in the saddle is inevitable. The properties of carbon tend to lend themselves during faster rides.  If you are young and fit then a full carbon or an Alu/carbon mix will suit you better.

The gearing issue and speeds required are a matter that you haven't given us any information for!  Try to give more info and you will get a more comprehensive answer (ie. stuff like, age, fitness, terrain, etc)

    Hope this helps.

  6. I would keep my eyes peeled on eBay and craigslist. Brand isn't that important but quality components are. I prefer aluminum and carbon frames, but I have friends that sware by their vintage steel ones. To me the lighter the better. If you are only riding 100 miles a week it isn't that big of a deal. Go to ur local bike shop and test out what feels comfortable and that will give you a better idea. And just remeber its not about the bike!!!
