  1. People have varied opinions of what it is, some focus on global warming, or alternate fuels, to me it is living a life with a minimal impact on the environement.

I like most Americans consume too much, waste too much, create too much garbage, use toxic cleaners and questionable beauty products, my food travels too far and in general use too many resources.

I strive to improve my way of life, I'm not talking about moving to an earthship or yurt. I live in a typical suburban home. I have managed to reduce my utility bill by about 25% without reducing any quality of life, mostly unplugging things, turning things off and line drying my clothes. I am in the process of getting solar panels installed (they are actually on my roof as I type). I belong to my utilities green energy program, which buys green energy in the amount I use. I've reduced my food miles, I found a wonderful organic farmers market where I can get most of my produce and meat from farms within 50 miles of my house. I'm in the process of phasing out my household cleaners and beauty products with products that have less chemicals and more natural ingredients. I avidly recycle, and use recylced products, mostly paper products. I have dramatically reduced one use or disposable items, no more paper plates, plastic utensils, plastic grocery bags they have been replaced with durable reusable items. I reduce packaging as much as possible, no more bread with 2 layers of plastic, I have cloth produce bags and I love the bulk aisle. I also compost most of my organic waste I have a worm farm which is a lot of fun.

I'm not perfect, but I constantly look for ways to reduce my impact on the earth. I do the easy things first, and will continue to look for ways to improve.

  2. To me green living is being envious of other people!

  3. green living is different for different people. Generally speaking you can consider green living to be your carbon footprint so to speak. Given that items that you purchase have to be shipped to the store where you buy them, there is an amount of carbon which is released in the process burned as fuel for the trip.  Also the packaging and products you buy both have to be processed which requires the use of electricity, heat or both which also burns fuels (whether by coal fired power plants which provide the electricity or by gas heaters for melting or sealing plastic wrap.

you can reduce your carbon footprint by buying from your local market, having your own garden, purchasing things which are not in plastic packaging etc...

Other things which you can do to do more green living is to turn down your thermostat, add more windows for more natural light. Minimize your use of machines for daily living and turn off AND unplug appliances when not in use.

Also, taking a walk to the store vs. driving will reduce your carbon output as well and is good for your health too.

The goal is to reduce your impact on the environment or live a little more green.
