  1. Well, the greenhouse gases, such as water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide, all help to keep the heat from the sun inside the earth's atmosphere. If it were not for these gases, the heat would escape, and so they are very important. However, some scientists and politicians are blaming us humans for "emitting" too much carbon dioxide into the air, which in turn is heating the earth, and will cause apocalyptic calamities (one of my favorite phrases). I have several problems with this theory, which is based on weak science, as I will now show. 1) CO2 is a weak greenhouse gas, methane being thirty times stronger, and water vapor even stronger than that. 2) Only 3% of all the CO2 in the atmosphere is man-made anyways, the rest being emitted, if I may use the term, by volcanoes, decaying plant matter, and other natural causes. 3) Throughout history, rising CO2 levels have been measured to FOLLOW rising temperature, not cause it. Because of these reasons, I find it very hard to believe that global warming is man-made.

Also, the sun seems to be much more influencial on the climate than CO2. It seems logical right? The charts showing temperature-sunspot correlation (sunspots make a hotter sun, giving of more heat radiation to the earth) match much more closely than CO2.

The "natural balance" of earth's climate is not delicate, but is strong enough to have preserved life on earth for thousands, if not millions, of years, and nothing we do will alter it significantly. Mankind is not killing the earth, contrary to what you might hear.

  2. Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.
