  1. As Lance said, it began as a way of showing that you are unarmed. Psychological studies have shown that people are more comfortable with other people when they can see the palms of their hands. This is an instinctual defense mechanism. The tradition continued to this day and it is now simply used as a greeting.

The instincts remain to be nervous when we cannot see what is in a person's hand, and a handshake can diffuse this discomfort. Waving with your hand serves a similar purpose.

  2. It's a greeting, mutual show of respect!  xox

  3. Lance is the only one here who is completely correct. It used to be a way of showing your enemy or rival or anyone else for that matter you weere not hiding a weapon up your sleeve.

  4. Handshake is a gesture of peace.

It is commonly done upon meeting, greeting, parting, offering congratulations, expressing gratitude, or completing an agreement.

In sports or other competitive activities, it is also done as a sign of good sportsmanship. Its purpose is to convey trust, balance, and equality.

  5. In ancient Rome i believe they used to shake each others wrist as a sign of trust or to see if the person they were meeting had a weapon hidden in his sleeve.

now a days its used just as a sign of respect.

  6. It's a greeting or a way to say good luck or goodbye. My boyfriend and I have a secret handshake.

  7. a sign of agreement, freindship, sealing a deal, a sort of promise . .

  8. symbol of friendship, greeting, for fun.....

  9. Spreading germs !!!

Seriously, it is a greeting and intoduction of yourself.

It really shouldn't be standard. Working in a corporate envionment I have seen people exit the rest rooms without washing their hands.

Then your in a meeting room shaking everyones hand around the table.

YUCK !! and no I am not a germ freak...

It just didn't take me long to figure that out. :-)
