I've lived in Melbourne for almost 20 years and i think its the best city in the world. But what is with all the violence that is going on on our streets every night?? It seems like these days you can't go one week without hearing about someone being murdered, bashed, stabbed etc.

What is wrong with our city??

Is it that i have been blind to all these problems in the past and have never ackowledged them, or is it that the media is only now beginning to report it more often??

  1. consider that  some years ago Night clubs closed and alcohol could not be consummed around the clock ...

Now people drink too much for too long....

I am beginning to think that Alcohol is to Australia , what guns are to America .......

ERRRR mark I think you will see that MORE alcohol is being drunk PER CAPITA now than before . .and when people were at home they were rarely likely to shoot a Bouncer or a stripper .. or stab some dude that they had NEVER ever met before.

  2. To rebutt II_Jenny, when pubs used to close early everyone would buy takeaways and go and party at someones house so no difference drinking wise between then and now really, except now it costs you more.

  3. SFA mate....

Like ya said murder and all that c**p..Only today a dude was shot on Kings Way in the city..1 good thing i suppose is East Link is opening early(yeah more money in the government back pocket).........Oh i should'nt say that, the tight a**es are giving us a free run for a month-yeah whoopy big bloody doo...

Yeah crime and other stuff is running rife now days.nt little takker come back from the local park yesterday and said there was a 'friggin' needle up there,i went up there and found 2 of the buggers..If junkie wanna kill em selves why do that c**p in a park where little ones go and play???

    Too much 'Underbelly' going on....

  4. i dont know, as i live in Briz...we have darn problems here now TOO!! as well as   some cops being rough to innocent people..on Tv last night........

  5. There's definately an issue with overpopulation. There's always been a crime issue here and in other places. There's a board of people who decide which crimes become public and they may be becoming more relaxed. I know someone who consults with the board and there are some horrific crimes that the public don't know about.

  6. Media + population growth.

It's a vicious cycle, the population feeds off the media, and the media feeds off the mistakes they make.  Eventually, Melbourne will be so diverse, there will be everything from cultural to stupid conflicts.

This happens to every large city, as someone above had said.  Once populations start entering the high millions....

I left the US to get away from that, and, if I can help it, I won't let it happen here.

  7. Melbourne's population (now 3.8 million) has grown by over 1 million people since 1980, a rise of over 35% in under 30 years. While not one of the world's largest cities, it is a large city by any standard and large cities have the type of problems you mention. What you should realise though, is that in Melbourne, every murder, severe bashing and stabbing is widely reported and you still only hear of one or two in most weeks. In many overseas cities the size of Melbourne there are many, many times the number of incidents and they are only reported if they happen in a very public place or if the death or injury toll is high. There are too many to bother about otherwise.

Melbourne, like every big city has always had it's share of violent crime. I remember my mother telling me of a Melbourne criminal boss named Squizzy Taylor whose gang was involved in murder, bashings, extortion and various other crimes from about 1908 until he was murdered in a shootout in 1927 with a rival Sydney crim who died in the same incident. Also, gangs of thugs from Richmond, Collingwood (Squizzy was from Collingwood) and other inner suburbs use to routinely have gang wars and bashings - so there's really nothing new, you just hear about it now.
