  10. Hawker food in Singapore these days are no longer real hawker food. Even the sarabat stalls at night fail to live up to its standard of true hawker food. How I miss those days when those mobile road-side stalls in Chinatown! Anyway, the term 'hawker' is a very Singaporean feel although such a practice has gone way back before Temasek became Singapura. No matter how much effort Makansutra try to bring back the good old times at Glutton Bay, the feel is no longer there. Agree?

  11. Hawker food is a mathematical fomular:

    Hawker food = food + nostalgia + cholestrol + greasy oil + MSG + pandemonium + savings - hygiene - health benefits - 10 years of a human lifespan.

  12. Carrot cake (SG style black!)...char kuay tiao (minus the bloody cockels)...chicken rice (roast with extra cucumbers)...mee pok (++ chilli and lard)...nasi lemak (add everything nice)...Indian rojak (the more stuff the merrier)...roti prata (kosong, egg, or onion?)...hokkien mee (squeeze lots of lime + chilli)...sugar cane juice and soya bean...cheng tng (stuffing everytime so stingy)...and not forgetting the colourful, towering ICE KACHANG!

Woooo! I feel really hungry now. :(

You really miss those things when you miss SG.

  13. junk food

  14. food from a hawker

  15. hawker food are just local delights, mainly asian food, sold in a confined area where it's called hawker centers. its no high class place and not air conditioned. but 1 thing for sure, u get the cheapest yet best food there.

  16. food that are sold in the hawker center ?

  17. The term "hawker" was once used to describe food vendors who moved their wares around in mobile carts... would send children, and their parents - scrambling from their homes into the streets to buy their favourite snack...

The roving hawker was a familiar fixture in the neighbourhood. Then came the roadside hawker, setting up shop on the streets after dark, when parking lots were emptied by cars and replaced by wooden tables and stools, and a pushcart which doubled as the kitchen...

Such hawkers have pretty much disappeared from modern Singapore, but hawker-style food remains hugely popular in our Singapore lifestyle...

  18. All the other answers are rubbish!!! Hawker started back in the 19th and early 20th century, before Singapore independence, when there were only posh restaurants for the caucasians. There were no place for the locals to enjoy food outside of their own home. So stalls were set up on roadsides or corners to sell cheap food, affordable for the locals. That's hawker!!! After independence, the govt banned all road stalls and hence the start of hawker centres for these stalls to continue serve the local population. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!! There were no hotdogs in hawkers!!!
