  2. Hd is a format. True HD is a 1080P signal. this is how many pixels are going across your screen. The more pixels, the sharper the picture. You can receive the signal from an aerial antenna, your own tv internal antenna (if built in tuner), cable, or satellite.

  3. This is a really confusing subject.  There are actually many different formats for Digital TV (DTV) and not all of them are HD (High Definition).  The easiest way for a consumer to tell of a signal is HD is to look at the picture.  If it is wide screen, it's HD, if it is square, it's Standard Definition (SD).  (One note here, some HD sets can stretch an SD picture to cover the whole screen, but it looks stretched and it's still SD).

HD signals use more lines from the top of the screen to bottom and more pixels across the screen to create an image.  The more pixels, the more detail can be shown and the sharper the picture looks.

Of the HD formats there is 720p (720 lines, progressively scanned), 720i (720 lines interlaced scanned); 1080p and 1080i.  The progressive scanned images look the best but the interlaced images aren't all that bad.  Most of the broadcasts you will get will be of the 720p or 720i variety but 1080i is becoming more common.  1080p looks REALLY good but it's a LOT of data and you probably won't see that except from a DVD because of the difficulty in moving that much data around.
