www.projectorpoint.co.uk are very good and they have a guide on the site which shows which projector would be best for you.

I bought an 720p projector from them for about £200.

That's almost impossible to answer. What constitutes best? What is "quite cheaply"?

That said, you can expect to pay a miniimum of about 2-300 for ANY projector and $500 or more before you can start to get picky.

See the link for a cheap refurbished projector from a reputable manufacturer (which is not to say it is a great projector or meets your (unstated) needs). At $288 it's a good deal.

I say the Mitsubishi 1500HD  (DLP) is best projector for the price.  You can get one quite easily for around $800, and even less off of Ebay.

It's a very bright projector and has a wide zoom range.
