What exactly is head start? and how do you qualify for the program in California?

i live with my boyfriend and two daughters, he is the earner and he makes about 30,000 About 18/hr. And we pretty much are living paycheck to paycheck so I would hope that we would qualify lol.

  1. You can google it to find out specifics and if you would qualify, but it is a program for low income families that provide a "head start" above what children who do not attend would get. I hear nothing but good things about it, and it's usually no charge for attendance for the kids.

  2. I have been researching this myself for my family. Unfortunately, the guidelines are very strict, income-wise. We are a family of 3 who make approximately 2000 a month after taxes and they say we make too much! Really? We still can't afford pricy day-cares every mo nth but we don't qualify for this? You have to be poverty stricken to get into this program it seems. For a family your size the Headstart guidelines are no more than 21,200 a year. It's very frustratng, I know. Once again, middle class is losing out..and dissapearing..we will one day be either rich or poor it seems. :) Well, hope this answered your question.

  3. Head start is a Federal program to help pre-school children. You must be low income and there are other things they look at. Basically, you get points for different things. Like where you live, your income, etc. Then, depending on how many kids are trying to get in that year and how many spots are open, the more points you have the better your chance to get in. Contact your local school district to find out where and when to register and they will walk you through everything else.
