  1. It's different in different parts of America. Where I live, public schools have uniforms, but in other places in the country they don't.

I go to a small school, so there's no checking for guns.

At my school, the popular girls are simply the most school spirited, friendly, and outgoing, not necessarily the prettiest,  but I know that's not the case in most schools.

  2. my school doesnt have gun checks. but we do have security guards to walk us to other buildings. haha our buildings are on lockdown during class. its pretty safe actually

  3. It's hard to give a general overview of how classes are in America, because things are run differently in each state. Public schools (ones you do not have to pay to get in to) do not have uniforms, and which one you go to depends on where you live. Some of your classes are required (english, for example) and some you choose.

In certain schools (not most) say, in bad areas, there may be checks for guns or metal detectors, but not usually. In my school, there's one drug sweep each year, but that's it.

It's not like in movies, 'least not where I go. There are popular people, but they're not all that hot, and they don't have quite that much control. Most classes have a combination of people in different grades, so there is no popular class that reins. It's just too mixed up for that.

  4. your friend is retarded. all school in america you get checked for guns? no.

Maybe if you live in the city or in a bad neighborhood they might check. AND some schools in america have uniforms too.

good lord. school is school no matter where you are, its going to be the same thing.

  5. Many city schools do have drug tests and metal detectors and locker searches. There is a lot of substance abuse, s*x, and vandalism. Fights happen every day. There are cliques, but not quite like in the movies. At my high school, people are just labeled as "popular", "nerd", "special-ed", "jock", "scene", "emo", etc. There actually are those blonde, stupid girls, but they mostly dye their hair and spend their time tanning and playing tennis. Oh yeah, and flirting. It's pretty sick to watch them. Many of them starve themselves or try to throw up after meals. If you can find the right group of people you can make it out relatively unscathed, but the drama all around school is SO obnoxious. Be glad you live in Australia. I'd trade with you any day.

  6. it's like myspace in person. LOL

  7. some high schools are like the movies, but ur friend is right we get checked for guns and other stuff. and our cafeteria we have to buy our own food we have different choices to pick and if u dont like it then u can always bring ur own lunch. and here public high schools u dont need to wear uniforms.

  8. its like being locked up in jail for 8 hours a day

  9. lol well you can dress however the h**l you want and and you get checked for guns and drugs if they suspect you have em..but you do have your right so if they ask to search you can say no but most likely they will just get search warrent so might as well let them haha..yeh a blonde could be popular...but its not just blondes..the football team can be a big deal ....

    hope i could help :)

  10. Some high schools have uniforms and some don't.  Not all schools have gun checks.  There are some cliques, but mostly, people are too busy with school to have to worry about being popular and stuff.  I got a long with everyone at my high school (with the exception of two idiots in chemistry).

so, sorta like the movies, but not much

    pretty boring

  11. haha idk how the schools are here, i dont really go to real school, i am through a privatised home school

  12. its boring and nothing like the movies.

  13. Well in my high school, we don't get checked for guns lol. Well, I got to a private school so I do have uniforms, but the high school all my friends go to, there is is no gun checking or anything like that. There is popular people but not all of them are blonde. I guess there are similarities and differences. Will you tell me a little more about school in Austrailia because I am really interested.

Thanks and I hope I answered your question.

    =]

  14. Hahaha. Um, kinda. We do have occasional searches, where we are searched for guns, blades, etc. And the populars are kind of like Barbie's. They think they're perfect, when really they just cover up their flaws, and they degrade everybody else. So you kind of got us correct. Yeah we have different cliques, and we aren't trusted at all. Teenagers are considered some of the most dangerous people in America, so yeah it's kind of like movies.

    P.S. I would hate having uniforms. :)

  15. Only certain schools check for guns. As for the stereo typical popular blonde's... sounds about right. Their are several groups in high school, you got the popular group, which is usually associated with the jock group, you got the emo group, nerd group, chinese group, hispanis group, then you got the gangster group.

  16. I'll tell you what my school is like.

    To answer your conceptions:

-My school does not search for guns or weapons. But we do NOT have lockers, because they are afraid we may store weapons there.

-We don't have uniforms, but some schools in America do.

-Yes, sadly, there are popular people, and they can be very blonde and sometimes very mean. Stuff that happens in movies is exaggerated sometimes, but yes, there are popular blonde people. Though most of the popular people at my school now have black hair, because the so called "emo look" is now in.

Um, also, we do have seperate classes and stuff, but my high school doesn't make us carry our books to class. We get a set of books at the beginning of the year. Then there's a class set, and each class uses the class set during class time.

Well, if you have any more questions, just go ahead and edit your question, and I'll edit my answer for you.

And PS, my sister said she loved school in Australia, when she traveled there in 9th grade.

  17. the thing is that not every school is the same. some schools have uniforms. some let kids wear what they want. some have detectors to check for guns and weapons. some schools don't. some schools allow students to carry book bags, some don't. its all a matter of what area you live in and what your specific school's rules are.

  18. Its just like that movie: Clueless

  19. 3 words. English Class.

  20. haha yeah,it's pretty much what your friend said. popular people who think they rule the school, metal detectors, gang fights, boring classes, gross lunches, and mean teachers. it's pretty great. of course, that all depends on which high school you happen to go to. not all schools have metal detectors, but most do these days. and some have uniforms, but that's usually just the private schools. consider yourself very blessed.

  21. NOTHING like the movies. Unless you live in a very dangerous neighborhood, I was never checked for guns. Some High schools have uniforms as well, however it is common for public high schools just have regulations on what you cannot wear. Cafeteria food is not so bad, I would rate it as a 8 out of 10. Most school lunches come frozen and already made and the "lunch ladies" just heat it up. It is like any other school. Some students sleep in class, some ditch, some pass notes, some text during lectures, some bring their own sack lunches, very typical.

  22. I live in Canada, and went to California for Spring Break, the schools are HUGE!

  23. not all schools get checked for guns and stuff my school has metal detectors though.....and ya theres def the blonde popular girls like in movies but i think thats stereo typical we dont have uniforms at my school but some schools do. we start school at like 7:45 am and get out at 3 p.m.....idk its hard to tell you what its like because idk how its diffferent in australia lol

  24. Some of our schools have uniforms, but most don't. The ones that do are usually private schools. In some schools -- usually the ones in big cities, you get checked for guns, or there's metal detectors.

I go to school in the same county where Columbine and Platte Canyon happened, so we have high security I guess; metal detectors at the doors and about six security guards. Right after Columbine, though, the whole state mandated seethrough backpacks for a while. Which is idiotic, because if you intend to shoot up the school, you wouldn't need to hide your gun anyway. You'd just shoot people who saw it, no?

Yes, it is like in movies with popular blonde people. It's very in-vogue to dye your hair blonde or with thick blonde highlights, so the popular mean people tend to be blonde.

We do have a cafeteria with milk and gross meals. A very, very few schools have good meals; most have awful meals. Mine gets pizza delivered daily from the nearby Domino's, so we're better than most, but you get sick of pizza after a while, and the other food is all awful. The milk is also bad. I stick to the bottled iced teas. Some of us bring our own lunch, and those that are allowed to drive off-campus go to fast food places like Wendy's, Q-Doba/Chipotle, Subway/Quizno's, or Jamba Juice.

We have a separate food store from the lunch line where you can only buy with cash, and the money goes basically to sports. There you can buy the caffinated sodas that aren't in the lunch line, chips/crisps (do not know what Aussies call them), candies, pretzels and things like that. We can no longer have caffinated sodas or frappuccinos in the lunch line because of stupid government health regulations and because a diabetic kid had a frappuccino and had medical problems. In America, there's lots of dumb things like that. Speaking of dumb health regulations, they control what we eat further; we now have to pay extra for fries, which used to be included with meals as a side.

Keep in mind that Colorado is NOT a state with much of an obesity problem. We have about ten overweight kids, at the most, in a school containing about 1400 people at least.

I had a teacher who taught in New Zealand; their school system sounds cool and makes more sense than ours, though it is hard to keep track of for the government. With ours, you don't get to choose learn anything useful to what you want to do until college. Not that most Americans pick a career path anyway at that point.

Basically the American school system sucks. For details on WHY it sucks for teaching people things, and why it makes students miserable, read this article: http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html

  25. some schools have metal detectors but most dont and no its not like the movies at all

  26. The blonde pretty girls do tend to be popular, other than that... umm. not really.  There are no uniforms, unless you go to a private school.  Only larger schools check for guns, etc.  Smaller schools don't.

  27. You only go through metal detectors at certain schools, depending on what area its in and what type of school it is. I went to a normal high school, but was then expelled and had to go to a different one which had metal detectors. The first one I went to didnt. Im 26 now but High School in USA is the same no matter what generation. You have your little groups at school and everybodys all worried about what kind of group they fit into. yes, theres always the blonde preppy girls aka the "the mean girls" and yes they hang around with the jocks and preppies. In my school we had the following "groups": Preppies, Jocks, Rednecks, Blacks, Mexicans, Asians, Freaks (goths punks were part of this group), Surfers and Skaters (sometimes mix with the preppies and jocks), and Nerds (theres nerds in all groups too though, not just their own group). I went to school in Florida and lived in California after that. Never went to school in California but the groups Im sure are a little different since theres more racial mixing in California and very few rednecks. Its different for everyone. For some people its this fun place to see their friends and gossip and have fun. For others its misery and they get bullied and beat up everyday.
