  1. vertical social mobility is the capacity to change your social status quo; while horizontal social mobility is your capacity to function within your present social status quo or present environment. Would it be better if this question was asked under the social science category?

  2. When you move horizontally you are within your socio-economic peer group or associated groups but have not moved vertically as in climbing the social ladder. Just one example could be that you may be socializing within the medical profession with the nurses and general staff so horizontally you meet neurosurgeons and the like so you get invited to more elite parties lets say but you haven't been invited to the white house dinner so a sharp vertical social climb could have you socializing with foreign dignitaries, political socialites and having dinner with the royal family.

  3. horizontal social mobility is when you get a new group of friends that is in the same socio-economic status as yourself.  Vertical is when you start hanging our with people of a higher earning.

  4. good s*x.

    Sorry that joke just happened.
