HTML, an initialism of HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of tags, surrounded by angle brackets. By convention, HTML format data files use a file extension .html or .htm.

An HTML Entity is a character descriptor. What it amounts to is that to insert a character, you enter its numerical or descriptive code instead of simply typing the character itself. This is done to ensure that the character is recognized in all browsers and all operating systems.

An entity consists of an ampersand, a pointer (the American pound sign), the number of the entity, and a semicolon.
