  1. The difference between a diesel engine and a normal petrol engine( one which uses spark plugs) is that, in a diesel engine the fuel is injected into a hot high pressure air causing it to ignite, while in a petrol engine the ignition is started by an electrical spark on a compressed fuel-air mixture.

The ignition delay in a diesel engine is the time after the piston has reached its top dead center compression stroke when the fuel is injected.

The ignition lag on a petrol engine is that time after the piston has reached its top dead center compression stroke when the spark plug fires.

The two terms actually are analogous to each other, save for the application.

  2. in diesel engines they have glow plugs that need to be warmed up, that is where the delay comes from , in gasoline engines  the ignition lag that you are referring to is the ignition timing so the pistons fire at an optimum rate .

    Good Luck
