What is in Oregano that makes it antibacterial?

Oregano has a lot of uses today, but what I need to know is its antibacterial properties.

And what also are some products/uses that uses its antibactrial properties?

  1. Carvacrol, or cymophenol, is an isomeric phenol found in oragano, thyme, marjoram and other plants.  Carvacrol inhibits the growth of several bacteria strains and has low toxicity and a pleasant taste.

    I have heard that oil of oregano was used to sterilize pre-operative instruments before the 1950's but I don't know if this is true.

    Today oil of oregano is found in a lot of dietary supplements that claim it cures everything from fungal infections, to allergies, to colds and the flu.
