What is in a boat survival kit???

My parents and I are going on a boat trip to the keys in florida. my mom wants to know what would be in a survival kit just incase we hit bad weather and the boat sinks or something and so we grab one thing and thats the kit. so what would be in it.. ( its a big yellow dry bag)

  1. Assuming you also grab a life-vest before the boat sinks, I would take:

    a knife (big one to defend yourself)



    water (dehydration is one of the leading causes of death for Cubans fleeing to America)

    sunscreen (you can get badly burned out in open water for any amount of time)

    a strobe light (so the Coast Guard can find you at night)

    Flare gun (same reason but also works during the day)

    Food (granola bars will work)

    This is all assuming that the boat actually sinks. Most boats are now made to float even if they capsize. This also assumes that you are very fearful of your safety. Most charters are required to file a "float plan" and have ship-to-shore radio so if the boat goes down it should not take the Coast Guard long to find you.
