  1. Heading North after Airlie beach is Townsville. - next major city is Cairns, then from Cairns it's about another 50 mins to Port Douglas via bus.

    Other info - you can catch a train between Cairns and Airlie Beach, (stops of at Proserpine, but only a few min drive by local coach service, or the courtesy coaches to Airlie Beach.)

    Once in Cairns there is coach services that can take you to Port Douglas.  http://www.sunpalmtransport.com

    Tip - My sons and mates when from Cairns to Airlie Beach last year.  Left at the same time, some driving, some on train - the vechiles got there first!
