I change my guinea pig's cage about once a week, but I noticed two small bugs crawling in between the bedding. I'm not sure if they're attracted to the bedding or the p**p and I'm not sure what to do about it.

  1. Well thats not good. your right, the bugs could be attracted to the bedding. try a different kind of bedding or if its not the bedding then look up those type of bugs and they will teach you how to get rid of them.or they mite be maggots. chack your pig for any bald spots of blood. Ask a vet for more info and good luck getting rid of those bugs.

  2. Sometimes insects are attracted to the p**p and sometimes they're attracted to food left in the cage. They can also come into your house via the bedding or the hay.

Whatever the case, insects in your piggie's cage is not a good thing. Take everything out of the cage and wash it down. Wipe the interior of the cage tray with a solution of white vinegar, diluted slightly with water. Then add fresh bedding and your piggie. It is not necessary to bathe your pig.

If you're feeding your piggie fresh veggies, and I hope you are, remove any leftovers within an hour after feeding to discourage insects.

Regarding the "vet tech" that posted earlier--you need to go back to school!

The insects you see are NOT mites. Mites are microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. They cause patchy hair loss and intense itching in guinea pigs. They are NOT transmitted to humans or other animals in the house. The mite that lives on the guinea pig is species specific.

  3. will need to know what they look like but maybe try cleaning the cage more often or changing your disinfectant. give the cage a good scrub with lots of disinfectant. hope this helps

  4. take em out the cage clean really good put fresh hay and stuffi n also give em a bath if bugs fall out get the shampoo where it kills em

  5. You should clean his cage to take out the bugs, then give him a bath incase he has mite or fleas.

  6. what in a full explanation do they look like, color, shape, ext.

  7. It sounds like your guinea pig has mites.  Many small rodents have mites, and chances are, he's had them since you got him.  I would recommend taking the guinea to an exotic vet to get some treatment.  Many guinea pigs can live with mites with no problem, but eventually, the mites will multiply so heavily that they will leave the cage and they will be all over your house.  They will feed on humans, your other pets, and end up in your bedding!  It's no fun at all.

  8. what do the bugs look like?

  9. Roly polies are sow bugs, and there are other sow bugs that don't roll up and are flatter.  Maybe that's what you have.  They like decomposing plant matter to eat, so they would like guinea pig p**p.  They are harmless, I wouldn't worry if that's what you have.

I have also seen earwigs around guinea pig droppings.  They are harmless too.

Mites are very tiny, you could barely see one, let alone give details of what it looks like.
