  1. As the name implies (inboard) means IN side of the boat

OUT board is when you see the motor attached to the stern and other than the covers it has is fully exposed to the elements

Stern drive is the part at the back of the boat which usually has a gearbox and propeller showing

  2. Inboard rather than outboard means the engine is inside the boat, rather than hanging on the outside at the back.

Sterndrive means its driving a propeller at the back of the boat, rather than one that is underneath the boat.

  3. A sterndrive is a combination of an inboard engine and an outboard. Picture a marine inboard engine usually mounted just inside the transom (sometimes they are moved forward and use whats called a jackshaft to drive the lower unit) driving what looks like the bottom half of the outboard  mounted outside the boat on the transom to propel the boat. They have the best and worst of both drive systems.
