i am a teacher at a school that has an excellent balanced literacy framework, and it has improved our reading and writing scores quite a bit.  it is only in its beginning stages, so we're very hopeful for the future!  the listed site is all about balanced literacy.  read through it and apply its premises to your classroom.  good luck!
