  1. Dependant variables depend directly on the scientific investigation under study. Independant variables affect the scientific investigation outwardly. You need an example: We wish to study how tomato plants grow under fixed environmental conditions. We fix the temperature and humidity and sunlight, and we plant our tomatoes. For the dependent variables we have our quality of soil, the amount of water we give each tomato plant, and the amount and type of fertilizer we feed them. These are our dependant variables. The independent variables are the temperature and humidity. Another independant variable can be the type of tomato plant used, and the possible presence of parasites (bugs) at the test location as well as the accuracy of the measuring equipment used to monitor the temperature and humidity. Independant variables affect the scientific investigation, but we try to fix them as much as possible to ensure best results.
