  1. infrared is a form of light with a frequency lower than the "red" part of the visible spectrum (hence the name "infrared", infra- meaning "less than")

  2. I don't blame you, because like electricity most of us don't see it.  But it's there for our use.

"Infrared (IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength longer than that of visible light, but shorter than that of microwaves. The name means "below red" (from the Latin infra, "below"), red being the color of visible light with the longest wavelength. Infrared radiation has wavelengths between about 750 nm and 1 mm, spanning five orders of magnitude. Humans at normal body temperature can radiate at a wavelength of 10 microns.[1]"

  3. Infrared is light with wave lengths so long you can't see it.

Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation. The sun, light bulbs and oven elements all emit electromagnetic radiation. Light has different wave lengths for different colors - blue has shorter waves and red has longer waves - just past the longest red wave length is the infra red.

We can't see infrared, because the cells in our eyes don't react to light outside visible wave lengths. Some animals, like mosquito's, can see infra red, and the military has special infrared goggles. We can all feel infrared, for example a light bulb has visible light, but also emits infra red light, which we feel as heat.

  4. This is electromagnetic radiation outside what our eyes can see denoting electromagnetic radiation of wavelength greater than that of the red end of the spectrum, having wavelengths of 0.75-1000 µm. Infrared rays are sometimes subdivided into long-wave or far-infrared (about 3.0-1000 µm) and short-wave or near-infrared (about 0.75-3.0 µm).

They are capable of penetrating body tissues to a depth of 10 mm. Sources of infrared rays include heat lamps, hot water bottles, steam radiators and incandescent light bulbs.

Infrared rays are used therapeutically to promote muscle relaxation, to speed up the inflammatory process, and to increase circulation to a part of the body.

Other applications would  include your television remote control, as it is infared energy. Also, if you have ever entered a room and had the lights go on automatically, chances are it was an infared signal that sensed your presence.  Infared is used in many engineering applications.  If it is strong enough you can put your finger on the end of your tv remote control and it will penetrate  and still turn the channel.   It will not likely penetrate your full hand width.
