  1. the big blob stuff is wax and theres a bulb that gets very hot so the wax breaks up and floats around hope this answers your question

  2. Wax with a low melting point, and an oil-based liquid that has a density *just* lower than that of the wax.

The heat-lamp melts the wax, and the wax expands until it is less dense than the oil - so it floats up to the top of the lamp.

It cools at the top, and becomes denser, and so it sinks again. And this happens over & over again.

If you leave your lamp on for too long, the oil becomes a uniform heat, and the wax just disperses to lots of tiny droplets; this is why you can only leave the lamp on for a few hours.

  3. the liquid varies . . . one such formula calls for oil based paint, isopropyl alcohol, and mineral oil.  Heres a link to how to make your own lava lamps . . .

  4. Oil & wax
