What is involved in a colonectomy surgery? Would he have to have a bag?

My vet is concerned about using anesthia again. They gave him a pill to relax him to help him pass the fecal matter and he almost died. He was basically out of it for 4 days. So I think another surgery is out of the question. Can I use a human laxative? Thanks in advance.

  1. I read your other questions to get more information on your kitty's condition.  Then I started researching.

One of the main causes of constant constipation in a kitty after diet has been ruled out is an injury to the pelvis.  Has your kitty had a significant injury that might be adding to this problem?

The colectomy surgery sounds like your last choice if the stool softeners, medications and diet modifications haven't worked.  The first link below has good information about this surgery.  It is a major surgery, so all the pre-op precautions should be taken.  With his reaction to anesthesia, I would also look into having this done at a large veterinary hospital or college where they are equipped to handle extreme emergencies.

No, he will not have a bag.  The part of the colon that is affected will be removed and the ends sutured together.

As for human laxatives, I would not try one of them without the vet's approval.  I am not sure what you have tried, but the third link has good information on laxatives and dietary changes.

I know you are greatly concerned for your beloved kitty and I hope you find what makes him comfortable and happy.

    Purrs to you and kitty.

  2. What is the problem with your cat?  Constipation or is there a mass in the colon or what?

If it's constipation, has your doctor given the cat Lactulose (Enulose)?  Have you tried DSS Tablets or Cisipride (propulsid)?  We have a couple of cats with constipation problems on a regimen of all of the above and their problems with constipation have ceased.

Human medications should never be given unless supervised by a vet.

  3. I think that you should seek a second opinion from another vet!
