What is involved in a "border run" from mexico to guatemala and back? do i need to go to the customs office?

my visa runs out in the end of april and i want to renew it. i figure its not as simple as just travelling over the border and back? do they just stamp you at the border or what? does it work by land and by air?

You need to re enter Mexico The FM T (180 day) can not be renewed or

extended.

B e sure ti surrender your present visa before you exit.

You are required to be out of Mexico for at least one day.

When you re enter Mexico you will pay and get a new one .

If you are talking about 90 days, if that's what you unfortunately given then you need to go to the nearest immigration office , stand in line to get the forms and then take those forms to a bank and stand in another line.  you then pay $200.00 pesos and return to the line at "La Migra" show them the reciept , get it stamped and be on your way.
