I'm 22 years old, and very interested in politics, and hate the way our government is being run (U.S. gov.) I want to try to make change work my way up to Congress. I've never been to any kind of schooling for politics or anything and I understand probbly the easiest route would start small (govenor, mayor, something like that.) but how do I get into political offices like that? Keep in mind I'm not a very wealthy person, so I do not have a lot of money to spend on a big campain or anything. Any advice on how to get started?

  1. If you are interested in making a difference in the life of your community, you should volunteer to serve on a Board or Commission of your city in a field of work that you either have expertise in, feel passionate about or both (Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Heritage Commission, etc.)

You can also apply for a local Leadership Program, assuming your city or county has one.  You will learn even more about the community in which you live, opportunities for service to that community, and techniques on how to achieve results (e.g., building consensus).

It costs no money to apply for a Board or Commission, and most Leadership Programs offer half or full scholarships based upon need.

Many if not most politicans start out in public service at the local level, develop meaningful programs, build relationships and move up from there.

One thing: starting small is not starting as a Mayor or Governor.  Infrequently does a person begin a political life at that level.

    Good luck!

  2. Tell people what they want to hear and make them feel good, If possible try to create a common enemy situation. This works in wrestling and when some like to keep groups stirred up, Keeps their mind off the real problems. For example notice how scientist can't solve the present problems so they focus on 14.7 billion years ago which most can't disprove. I'm told politicians get their raises whether they vote for it or not...james the hollow earth man
