Can piano tuning be performed reasonably by an amateur with inexpensive tools, or is it best to hire a professional?

Would tuning fix a couple of keys that produce antique sound rather than normal sound?

  2. If it’s only a few keys, yes… you can do it by yourself. It’s a simple adjustment.

I make the tuning of my piano and I’m a amateur.

The first thing I do it’s to identify the keys that sound out of tune. Then, I play with my hand (directly, without the keys) every single string of that key and located the string that I need to adjust by comparing the sound.

Just move the pin of the string, like tuning a guitar. The trick is to moved very little. The piano strings are very sensitive to the tension compared to the guitar.

If there are too many keys that sound bad, pay to a professional. They have the properly tools to do it.

For that antique sound that you mention, I don’t know. Maybe the tuning it’s the problem, but first you need to play every single string of that key and hear if they sound equally. If that’s not the problem, go to a professional because it can be the hammer or the strings that are wear out and need to be remplace.
