Question:

What is it about Ouija boards....?

I mean, I would never fool around with those things - but my question is why are they so evil (or not - if you think the opposite)? What is it about the board itself? Are the symbols depicted in such a way as to allow spirits through? Is there something inside the board (though I doubt it seeing as they are mass produced) that allows for such abnormal communication? Where did these things come from and what makes them work? Obviously if you asked a question out loud or into a phone, you would get no response, so what makes a piece of cardboard so different?

  1. There is nothing special about a Ouija board.  It's the same as a Monopoly board, with different drawings, but without all the fun little tokens.

  2. Ouija boards are just silly toys, so nothing is dangerous about them. I've known several people who used them. All they got was silly answers on them. They do nothing when my friend and I try them. We know they're fakes. People consciously or sunconsciously push the thing that moves and give answers they believe are correct. A Ouija board won't give anything outside the user's experience. My room mate told about people getting answers only in their own languages. My friend is Japanese, and Americans won't get her name in any answers. If Ouija boards really worked, they'd give Japanese and Italian names and words as easily as English ones.

  3. I understand you are asking why they work when they are simple materials.  However, the why is actually caught up in the user.  Answerer 1 has explained the user is more the conduit for communication not the board itself.

  4. the first dudes answer is the way to go... dangerous because of how they work.

You have to lower your will allow them to control you, this gives them control that cannot be revoked, hence you sell yourself into slavery to some spirit or demon..

enjoy! (not you, I mean all these users out there!)

  5. It's a really good idea not to play with these things.  The ouija board, like any other tool used in contacting spirits is used as a focus and a means of communication.  Another tool is called a planchette; a wheeled platform with a pencil through the middle for use in automatic writing.  The real problem of course is that you have no control over what you are communicating with.

Humans were not the first sentient creation.  Angels came first and were tested in their turn before Adam and Eve.  The ones that failed the test mustered 'round their chief called Lucifer refusing to serve their maker.  The army of the righteous Angels, led by Michael, were victorious with the help of God, and the dark angels were cast into h**l.  These creatures are extremely cunning and envious of the second chance God awarded humankind.  They are always on the lookout for an opportunity to corrupt a human soul.

If you consider that human souls either go to a place of preparation called purgatory, or heaven, and we hope, a very few are in h**l, how could they be communicating with us?  It begs the question; if they aren't doing it, are the communicators really these evil spirits set to deceive?  Possession is a real and thoroughly documented phenomenon.  I know an exorcist personally.  That movie, 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', is very closely based on a real story!

In answer to your question.  It doesn't matter what the ouija board is made of, because the power doesn't come from it.  The use of it is an act of submission to any spirit that wants to cause mischief or worse and believe me, they will take people up on the offer if it's going!

  6. Ouija boards operate by having you lower your will and allow spirits to have control over your brain's motor functions. This lowering of will is dangerous, in my opinion.

Evil is an action. Ouija boards, being inanimate objects, are not and cannot be evil. But the spirits they contact could be (even if the chances are good that it's not, the possibility exists).

Spirit boards like the Ouija can be made from anything, so long as the lettering is clear and the language is understood.

In my own experience, I haven't had a good long-term relationship with any Ouija, and the last one I used was in 2004, made from a pizza box with a black magic marker and using a glass ashtray as a pointing device, and the glass ashtray shot out of my hands and shattered against a nearby wall when I refused to allow full access to my mind. That was one frustrated cerebro-motor function, and I still don't know how it worked to this day. I just know that it did, and that I wasn't the one moving it (even though I was the only one touching it).

My other experiences with spirit boards weren't as dramatic, but still not what I'd call positive interactions. If you really want to work on contacting spirits, let me please suggest EVP as an alternative. The results are clearly not generated by the person, there's no lowering of willpower involved (though an open mind does help), and no psychic abilities of any kind (real or not) need to be claimed in order for it to work well.

And all you need is a digital recorder. I tend to like Olympus for this, as the other brands have noise reduction technology that tends to also reduce volume, thus also reducing the EVP responses that you might get. And no spirit board burning ceremony is needed afterward. Just good ears and patience. And fresh batteries every so often.

  7. Answer:  it doesn't.  You don't communicate with the unliving or spirits.  You may well communicate with the unconscious thoughts, questions or longings of other members of the group.  What comes up may be banal; it frequently is.  But occasionally it can be frightening, as I have related in other answers on this topic.

Just as our unconscious minds can throw up frightening images as nightmares when we are asleep, upsetting ideas can be communicated from the unconscious level of our waking minds when playing with so-called divination apparatus such as the ouija board.  People can deliberately manipulate the planchette but, more often, they can do it without being aware of it.  Because of the spooky group atmosphere everyone goes along with it.  No-one is deliberately pushing the board.  It appears to move of its own accord.  But actually one or more people with their hands on the board is pushing it, ever so subtly, to choose certain letters and spell out a message.

All of us have a load of disturbing memories, feelings and images which our conscious mind suppresses.  When these get to the surface, in dreams or through seance-like games, the results can sometimes be very scary - as bad or worse than your worst nightmare.

It's not a spiritual issue.  It's a mental health issue.  Avoid.
