I understand bc it didn't include certain races in the past, but the parts of respecting others, open mindedness, calmness, avoiding conflict...why are these things that some resist to TODAY?

  1. The problem lies in the "I don't care what anyone thinks" method. If you don't care what someone thinks, then it won't bother you to hurt them, be rude to them, etc. We should all care how we act towards others, even if they are strangers.

  2. Define mainstream culture, first of all. Things like American Idol for example might not be enjoyed by most or even the majority of people, but because it is on one of but a few major broadcasting networks, it seems as though it would be.

People make the mistake of thinking that shows like American Idol are around because people wanted them to be around. It is the opposite, shows were made and subsequently developed a following. Think of it as "supply, then demand" instead of supply and demand.

Also, think about why mainstream culture would not encompass all races, etc. The majority of the US population is white. The majority of the US spending power is in the hands of white people.Hence, the shows on television are geared towards the white population, so make it more profitable. It follows that non whites would be less inclined to follow 'mainstream trends' as whites would.

  3. that its a hierarchy

good-looking, smart people at the top
